EGR valves blocking/sticking, worth cleaning it out along with the inlet manifold and inlet ports. Intercooler hose under the EGR known for splitting, reduces power, sooty exhaust, hissing under the bonnet. The D models use a Dual Mass Flywheel, not the most reliable item in the world.

a sudden the engine cut out and the coil lamp was flashing. Managed to roll into a lay-by turned the ignition off then back on coil lamp went out as usual but took about 4 attempts before the engine started properly, drove home no further problems.
