In general extenders are a poor idea. You give a lot to get little. There are a few "L" lenses that tolerate an extender fairly well. Most lenses don't. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens and the Canon Extender EF 1.4X II work well together. I have this combo so I can recommend it. It also works well with the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM
I use the 2x extender quite often on the 600mm Canon II. And yes, there is an visible lower image quality. BUT the bigger size of the subject you get, is more worth than the lower image quality. If you body knows to deal with f8, the 2x extender is definitively worth buing. •••

I use with the 70-200mm 2.8 when I need extra reach, but still need the shorter minimum focus distance over the 100-400mm. Great piece of equipment.
All Canon super telephoto lenses are also compatible with the Canon Extender EF 1.4x III and the Canon Extender EF 2x III. The resulting lens combinations are impressive - 560mm f/4.0 IS and 800mm f/5.6 IS weather-sealed lenses that autofocus on all current Canon EOS bodies.
