I use the 2x extender quite often on the 600mm Canon II. And yes, there is an visible lower image quality. BUT the bigger size of the subject you get, is more worth than the lower image quality. I use with the 70-200mm 2.8 when I need extra reach, but still need the shorter minimum focus distance over the 100-400mm. Great piece of equipment.
